Mountains on Fire Tiroler Zugspitz Arena
Zugspitze & Co in flames
The Mountain fires of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena is one of the most important events of the year. Each year on the summer solstice (3rd Saturday of June / next Saturday to midsummer), glowing fire sculptures decorate the peaks around Ehrwald, Lermoos and Biberwier. Just after dusk, fire symbols of up to 200 metres in height illuminate the starry sky in order to celebrate the longest day and the shortest night. The mountain fires are part of the Austrian UNESCO cultural heritage list.
Date 2020: 20.06.2020 | 21.30 Uhr
In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed to another weekend. Please check our website beforehand!
Motives & Making of
When the dusk falls over the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, jittering chains of light start to appear on the crests of the mountains. They slowly transform into pictures until you can see the glowing crosses, burning deer or other symbolic & mythological figures. Also modern symbols can be admired. The astonishing fire sculptures are truly a fiery spectacle in the Alps where the mountains are the stars of the night.
The planning of the mountain fires starts already months before. More than 300 men give their best to create great symbols. First, the volunteers measure the mountain faces already considering the right angle. As soon as a topic for the symbol is created, up to 700 sacks filled with rapeseed oil and sawdust are carried up the mountains. Then, the sacks are positioned correctly so that spectators in the valley can recognise the figures easily. Very good mountaineering skills are required as the anchoring of the fire images can take place at 2,000 metres.
The origin of the fire solstice started long ago: since the 14th century demons and evil spirits are banished by fire.
