Useful information

Ehrwald is located at around 1,000 metres above sea level and includes the districts of Obermoos, Ehrwald-Schanz, Oberdorf, Unterdorf, Schmiede and Weidach. The largest village in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena lies directly at the foot of the Wetterstein mountains, which also include the 2,962-metre Zugspitze. The Loisach river separates Ehrwald from the neighbouring village of Lermoos while naturally connecting the two at the same time.

Here you can find the village map of Ehrwald.

The name “Ehrwald” likely derives from the Old High German “erro wald”, meaning “beginning of the forest”. Other interpretations include “old forest” or “ore forest”, which would match the former ore deposits in the region.

Ehrwald was first mentioned in 1274. From early mining to the production of wooden staves, the village developed steadily over the centuries. With the opening of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn in 1926, tourism began to flourish, turning Ehrwald into an important year-round destination.
